The RNC: A Stockpile of Sweet Lies

Listening in on the current status of our election is an act that I frequently do regardless of my inability to vote as a minor. Never have I seen an election with such importance and weight as the one that will take place this November. We, the people, have to choose between two candidates of very different parties and policies to bring us back from the shatters our country is currently in. To broaden my knowledge of both options, I watched both the Democratic and Republican National Convention.

I have my separate reservations about the DNC and its weight on moral and character over policy. However, the RNC completely struck me by surprise. They stayed on the offense, bashing Biden and the Democratic Party at every available opportunity. Nonetheless, the worrying part of it all is that their route on the offense was infested with sweet lies.

The first night alone, the RNC made around 40 false claims and exaggerations. There is no doubt that the DNC was not wholly truthful, but the number of lies recorded in the entire DNC was less than just one of the RNC nights.

Yet, the blatant amount of lies the RNC made is not the major issue – it’s the fact that their lies could work in their favor. Following the RNC, several polls are showing an increase in national support for Trump.

Our country and democracy are at stake in this pandemic and time of political uncertainty - we must seek the truth over all else. It is abundantly clear that one side values the truth less than the other.

As First Lady Melania Trump stated in her speech the second night of the conference, “Total honesty is what we as citizens deserve from our president.”
